The loudest voices were not the lived ones

Early on in my research it was pretty clear that the voices we were not hearing were from neurodiverse people themselves, and the loudest voices were clearly white researchers, authors, and scientists. I had to dig deeper to find diverse voices.

My questions are multiplying. How did Judy Singer become "the mother of neurodiversity" when there were so many non-white neurodivergent voices before her? I am trying not to judge. I just wonder.

That wondering is a method question as much as a moral one: whoever gets credited for naming a thing tends to control how the thing is studied afterward.
